How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm hazmat applicability with the SDS, then choose tight, dust-proof packaging: UN-rated drums or multiwall paper/cloth bags with inner liners and secure closures.
- Mark the BOL clearly: “NMFC 22820 Battery Mix—ground manganese ore and graphite, Class 55,” and add the proper shipping name, UN/NA number, and emergency contact if regulated.
- Unitize thoughtfully: place drums on sturdy pallets with rings or cradles; for bagged product, use slip sheets, corner boards, and stretch wrap. Add a moisture barrier and “Keep Dry” labels.
- Plan carrier handling: notify the terminal it’s a fine powder, avoid co-loading with foodstuffs, request non-stack for bag shipments, and share the SDS ahead of pickup to prevent delays.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 55 simplifies quoting and carrier selection, reducing reclass risks and invoice disputes.
- Right-size packaging (drums vs. bags) balances handling speed and damage prevention, lowering claim incidence and cleanup/accessorial fees.
- Clear hazmat documentation accelerates tender-to-pickup cycles and keeps freight flowing through cross-docks with fewer exceptions.
- Segregating from food and preventing dust escape protects brand reputation and minimizes regulatory exposure and penalties.
