How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Enter NMFC 22930 and Class 50 on the BOL; note packaging (cloth/paper bags, boxes, or drums) to match carrier handling expectations.
- Use moisture barriers: line bags or boxes with poly liners to prevent clumping and caking; seal drums tightly (e.g., 55-gal with ring lock).
- Palletize tightly with no overhang; stack interlocked, add corner boards, and stretch-wrap to contain fine powder in transit.
- Prevent punctures by separating loads from sharp-edged equipment; for example, place 50 lb paper bags in double-wall cartons before palletizing.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 50 delivers favorable LTL rates for industrial minerals, lowering landed cost for cement plants, alumina refineries, and refractory suppliers.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and broadens carrier options, speeding tendering and reducing compliance steps.
- Single, density-independent classification reduces reclass risk and quote variance, improving pricing predictability across recurring shipments.
- Approved packaging (bags, boxes, drums) minimizes leak cleanups and accessorials, protecting margins and on-time delivery performance.
