How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Select fit-for-purpose packaging: breathable bags with food-grade liners for fresh berries, double-wall boxes for dried fruit, or tight-head drums when oils or moisture risk is high.
- Palletize for LTL: use 40x48 pallets, keep stack height under ~48 inches, add corner boards and a top sheet, and stretch wrap to prevent bag slippage or box crush.
- Note the commodity clearly on the BOL: “Berries, palmetto – NMFC 23440, Class 70, non-hazardous,” and list counts by package type (bags, boxes, or drums) for accurate handling.
- Protect quality in transit: avoid excessive heat that can accelerate fermentation, keep loads ventilated if shipping fresh, and request “Do Not Top Load” to prevent crushing.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 70 simplifies quoting and budgeting across seasons and lanes.
- Flexible packaging options let you balance protection and cost—bags for low-cost bulk, boxes for stackability, drums for premium moisture control.
- Non-hazardous status reduces compliance steps and eliminates hazmat surcharges, speeding up tender-to-pickup times.
- Lower claims risk with proper unitization and labeling, improving margin on nutraceutical and botanical supply chain moves.
