How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Confirm the commodity is blank: no printed ads or messages. If any graphics are present, re-check Note 23482 and select the proper NMFC instead of 23480.
  2. Protect faces and edges: foam or bubble wrap the panels, add corner/edge guards, then box or crate. Band frames securely and bag hardware separately inside the package.
  3. Quote and tender as packages, not loose pieces. List total piece count, the largest dimensions including packaging, and actual weight per package. Flag overlength pieces (>96 in) with your carrier.
  4. Choose the correct sub-item within 23480 to align to class 77.5 or 100. Materials and construction can matter—reference the item note and verify with your 3PL or carrier tariff team.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Accurate qualification as blank signboards minimizes reclass disputes and back-billed adjustments tied to advertising content.
  • Packaging to the NMFC expectation (packages) reduces inspection delays, improves dock handling, and speeds pickup-to-delivery cycles.
  • Knowing the class range upfront enables tighter LTL quotes, cleaner rate benchmarking, and fewer surprise accessorials for miscoded freight.
  • Damage control through edge and face protection lowers claim frequency and preserves finish quality, reducing rework and replacement costs.
