How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 23485 on the BOL and describe the freight as “Binder, coal briquette, in drums, or in cloth or four-ply paper bags.” Apply Class 50 and skip density details.
- For drums: use tight-head steel drums, palletize with drum boards or rings, band twice, and stretch wrap. Mark orientation to prevent seepage during LTL handling.
- For bagged loads: stack cloth or four-ply paper bags in an interlocking pattern on dry pallets, add a slip sheet, and fully wrap to curb scuffing and tear-outs.
- Share an SDS and note if the binder is liquid or dry to set handling expectations, even though it is non-hazardous and does not require hazmat paperwork.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 50 delivers predictable rating and often lower LTL costs versus density-based items.
- Reduces reclass and inspection fees since the class is not tied to density or dimensions.
- Clear packaging pathways (drums or specified bags) lower damage risk and claim exposure.
- Non-hazardous status expands carrier options and speeds quoting, pickup, and transit planning.
