How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 23620 and Class 55 on the BOL, note non-hazardous status, and specify carton count and weight to prevent inspection delays.
- Use double-wall corrugated boxes with a sealed poly liner or inner bag to contain fines and moisture; tape seams and reinforce bottoms for heavy loads.
- Palletize cartons on a 40x48 pallet in an interlocking pattern; avoid overhang, apply stretch wrap to the pallet base, add corner boards, and use two bands to limit bulging.
- Keep freight dry and stow low in the trailer; mark cartons as heavy and avoid top-loading under fragile goods to minimize crush risk and leakage.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 55 for dense granular goods helps secure lower per-pound LTL rates compared to higher classes, cutting transportation spend.
- Fixed class with no density rating reduces reweigh/reclass fees and speeds rating, improving billing accuracy and cash flow.
- Properly boxed and lined packaging minimizes spill and moisture claims, protecting margins and carrier relationships.
- Standardized pallets and clear labeling speed cross-dock handling for pet supply and retail replenishment, supporting reliable lead times.
