How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Book at Class 50 under NMFC 23880 and describe the commodity as “Fertilizer Blacks, dry.” Select the packaging that matches your load: bags, drums, or Package 115.
- Palletize bagged product with slip sheets, stretch wrap, and corner boards to stop staining and shifting. Band and cap drums to prevent denting during cross-dock turns.
- Use poly liners and dust‑tight closures to control fine powder and block moisture intrusion. Mark BOL as non‑hazardous to avoid unnecessary hazmat holds.
- When routing through multiple terminals or export, request enclosed equipment and add a top sheet; provide an SDS if the carrier asks for one due to powder handling policies.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 50 rating delivers predictable, generally lower LTL rates versus higher classes.
- Non-hazardous designation removes hazmat surcharges and special compliance costs.
- Packaging flexibility (bags, drums, Package 115) lets you choose the most efficient handling and cube for your network.
- Correct NMFC usage reduces reclass inspections, accessorial surprises, and claims linked to dust transfer or contamination.
