How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the BOL as Carbon/Lamp/Oil/Vegetable Black, NOI, dry — NMFC 23940, Class 85, and include accurate piece counts (e.g., 40 bags or 4 drums) and total weight.
- Select tight-closing packaging: lined multiwall bags, sturdy boxes, or sealed drums, or use NMFC Package 115 when applicable. Palletize square, add a top cap, and stretch-wrap to contain dust.
- Protect from moisture and abrasion. Use plastic liners or bag-over-bag methods, avoid overstacking bagged pallets, and add ‘Do Not Double Stack’ cones if bag strength is limited.
- Verify SDS and confirm the material is not offered as Hazard Class 4. If any lot is hazmat, do not use this item; apply proper hazmat shipping procedures instead.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 removes density disputes, delivering predictable LTL rating and cleaner quotes.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat fees and expands carrier options, accelerating tender-to-pickup timelines.
- Using approved bags, boxes, drums, or Package 115 reduces dust escapes and leakage, cutting claims and rework.
- Accurate NMFC 23940 usage minimizes reclass/rebill risk, helping finance track true freight costs and preserve margins.
