How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use corrugated boxes with poly liners to contain loose fibers or granules; seal seams with tape to prevent dusting during handling.
- Keep units dry and protected from compression—rock wool and wood fiber shapes can deform; use corner posts and avoid over-stacking on pallets.
- Palletize small cartons into one stable unit with stretch wrap and top sheets; no overhang to reduce crush and claim risk.
- Mark cartons “Lightweight—Do Not Crush” and note NMFC 24110 Class 150 on the BOL for smooth inspections and fewer reclass fees.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 150 simplifies instant rating and reduces density disputes for lightweight, bulky starter media.
- Non-hazardous designation avoids hazmat fees and special handling, improving transit flexibility and capacity options.
- Boxed packaging aligns with the tariff description, lowering chances of inspections, delays, and reclassification charges.
- Better cube control and palletization reduce damage rates on fragile forms and plugs, protecting margin and customer satisfaction.
