How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify coverage using the Note for item 24282, then list NMFC 24220 on the BOL. Use the commodity name “Blood, dried” and specify bags or drums with piece counts and total weight.
- For bagged product, choose heavy multiwall or poly-lined bags. Palletize in interlocked layers on 48x40 pallets, add corner boards, stretch wrap tightly, and top-sheet to keep moisture out.
- For drums, use tight-head steel or fiber drums with liners. Torque bungs/lids, band drums two ways to a pallet, and block to prevent rolling. Avoid double-stacking unless packaging is rated.
- Rating tip: a 2,000 lb pallet of 50 lb bags bills at fixed Class 50. Density isn’t required, but precise weights and counts help prevent reclass and inspection fees.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 50 delivers favorable LTL rates and predictable costing versus higher freight classes.
- Non-hazardous designation eliminates hazmat surcharges and broadens carrier acceptance, simplifying scheduling.
- Standard bag or drum packaging moves smoothly through LTL terminals, cutting handling time and damage risk to lower total landed cost.
- Straightforward documentation (NMFC 24220, item note reference, packaging type) reduces reclass disputes and accelerates quoting and billing.
