Note 24282: NOTE-Does not apply on any commodity which is defined and specified as medical waste in Federal regulations. For applicable class, see item 101682.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC item 24280 on the BOL and consult Note 24282 to choose the correct class (100 or 200) based on your specific packaging and service needs.
- Pack in rigid, insulated boxes with leakproof secondary containment, absorbent liners, and cushioning; use gel packs or dry ice per your SOP and carrier rules.
- Protect the cold chain by booking time‑definite LTL, avoiding weekend layovers, and specifying handling cues like “Keep Refrigerated” or “Keep Frozen” as applicable.
- If using dry ice, declare UN1845 and net weight per carrier policy; apply temperature and handling labels on multiple sides even though the plasma itself is non‑hazardous.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate class selection per Note 24282 prevents reclass fees and stabilizes freight rates across carriers.
- Non‑hazardous commodity status broadens carrier options and reduces hazmat accessorial exposure when no regulated coolant is used.
- Right‑sized packaging can align with the lower of the two classes when permitted, cutting LTL costs without risking temperature excursions.
- Reliable cold‑chain practices minimize spoilage and reshipments, protecting budgets and critical delivery timelines for healthcare clients.
