How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Note the item as “Stove boards, in packages – NMFC 24495, Class 65” on the BOL to prevent density disputes and reclass fees.
- Pad edges and corners with protectors, then wrap the package tight (corrugated or foam) before strapping; stove boards are edge-sensitive and scuff easily.
- For multiple packages, palletize: use a flat pallet with slip sheets between layers or an A-frame for rigid panels to keep them from bowing.
- Add clear handling marks like This Side Up and Do Not Stack caps when applicable, and avoid placing heavy freight on top of the panels.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 65 yields predictable LTL pricing, simplifying rate shopping and budgeting for stove board shipments.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges, cutting total landed cost.
- Accurate NMFC usage reduces reclassification risk, curbing surprise rebills and speeding claims resolution.
- Proper packaging (edge guards, tight wrap, secure banding) lowers damage rates, preserving margins on fragile panel products.
