How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Select the correct subclass based on container type (bags, boxes, crates, or drums) and material construction; verify the class within the 70–150 range before quoting.
- Pack pirns and cop tubes so tips and flanges cannot puncture the carton—use dividers, cells, or sleeves, and bag loose pieces to prevent spill-out.
- For boxes or crates, block and brace inside, fill voids, and palletize without overhang; avoid nesting pieces in ways that alter the counted quantity.
- Label with NMFC 25327, item description, container type, and piece count; note that it is non-hazardous so no hazmat documentation is required.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate subclass selection minimizes reclass fees and billing disputes, stabilizing LTL quotes for textile component shipments.
- Optimized packaging (sturdy boxes or well-built crates) reduces handling risk and claims, improving delivered quality and customer satisfaction.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and speeds dock processing, helping pickups and linehaul move without special approvals.
- Clear counts and secure unitization cut OS&D exceptions and detention at terminals, lowering indirect costs and cycle time.
