How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Quote and book at Class 85; list “aluminum hat or cap bodies, nested, boxed, no trimmings” on the BOL to match NMFC 25335 and avoid reclass.
- Nest shells with kraft paper or thin foam between layers to prevent scuffing; fill carton voids so lightweight parts don’t rattle in transit.
- Palletize cartons flat with a top cap and corner boards; stretch-wrap and use light banding to prevent crushing the thin aluminum rims.
- Exclude visors, liners, fasteners, or other trimmings; mixing accessories can change the NMFC, impacting rates and inspections.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 removes density calculations, reducing reclass fees and surprise rebills.
- Nested-in-boxes packing lowers cube, improving LTL rate eligibility and trailer utilization.
- Non-hazmat aluminum parts ship on standard lanes, minimizing accessorials and simplifying compliance.
- Boxed presentation accelerates dock handling and cuts damage claims on formed metal shells.
