Notes
Note 25492: NOTE-Applies on units, each consisting of one or more lengths of finned pipe or tubing and front and back panels necessary to enclose pipe, with or without dampers or installation fittings.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify applicability of the note referenced in item 25492 and choose packaging listed here—boxes or crates—based on unit length and fin protection needs.
- For runs over 8 feet, crate the units with full-length runners and blocking to prevent bowing; for cartons, add foam rails, end caps, and a rigid spine.
- Palletize long cartons on skids that extend past the ends; band with edge protectors and mark “Lift From Ends” and “Do Not Stack” to avoid fin damage.
- Measure overall length including end caps and skid overhang; disclose any overlength thresholds (e.g., 96–120 in) to prevent unexpected carrier surcharges.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat fees, streamlining LTL tendering.
- Using approved box/crate methods reduces OS&D claims on delicate fin assemblies, protecting margin and schedule.
- Aligning with the item note minimizes reclass/reweigh disputes, cutting chargebacks and administrative churn.
- Consolidating multiple units into one long crate or skid lowers per‑unit rates and limits accessorial delays at delivery sites.
