How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the item on the BOL as “Boiler Arches or Sidewall/Arch Blocks, iron and firebrick combined – NMFC 25500, Class 50” to prevent reclass and inspections.
- Palletize or crate with the iron face down and cushion the firebrick surfaces using foam, corrugated pads, or honeycomb. Add edge protectors and steel/plastic banding.
- Distribute weight evenly on a 4‑way pallet, block and brace to stop shifting, and apply Do Not Stack cones for fragile refractory surfaces.
- Photo-document packing layers and label each unit with piece count and orientation arrows to reduce shortage and damage claims.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 50 rating helps secure lower LTL rates for these dense iron–firebrick assemblies.
- Simple, non-density classification speeds quoting and tendering, cutting admin time and reclass risk.
- Proper bracing and cushioning limit brick chipping and abrasion against iron, reducing claim costs.
- Accurate BOL wording for NMFC 25500 curbs carrier adjustments and keeps invoices predictable.
