Note 27802: NOTE-Does not apply on any commodity which is defined and specified as medical waste in Federal regulations. For applicable class, see item 101682.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the item as “Bones, NOI, ground or not, in bags or drums — NMFC 27800” on the BOL, and reference Note item 27802 if required by your carrier.
- Choose packaging by condition: double-lined poly bags for dry, coarse bone; tight-seal plastic or steel drums with liners for ground bone to control odor and prevent leakage.
- Palletize heavy bags/drums on sturdy 4-way pallets, use slip sheets, and stretch-wrap tightly; avoid overhang and mark total weight on each pallet for forklift safety.
- Separate from food-grade goods and temperature-sensitive freight; consider absorbent pads and odor barriers, and request pickup windows that fit renderer/meat processor schedules.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 50 rating supports lower base rates for dense bone shipments, reducing LTL costs versus higher-class items.
- Clear NOI coverage minimizes reclass disputes, accelerating quotes and avoiding surprise adjustments or inspection fees.
- Right-size packaging (bags vs. drums) balances material cost, stackability, and damage prevention to cut claims and waste.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and expands carrier options, improving lane flexibility and backhaul opportunities.
