How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack pairs in sturdy corrugated boxes with foam or dividers; wrap each bookend so paint and felt bottoms don’t scuff during transit.
- Keep each carton manageable—aim for under 40 lb—since cast iron is dense and heavy for its size, reducing carrier handling issues.
- Fill voids and add corner/edge protection; perform a shake test so bookends cannot shift and crack or dent each other.
- For LTL, stack boxed sets on a 48x40 pallet with no overhang; band and stretch-wrap, and label by set count (e.g., 12 pairs per carton).
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 rating prevents density disputes, lowering the risk of reclass charges and billing surprises.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat fees and special documentation, streamlining pickup and transit.
- Boxed packaging aligns with carrier expectations, improving claim outcomes and reducing OS&D exposure on decorative metal goods.
- Dense, compact items let you build weight efficiently on a pallet, improving cost per CWT for retailers and home décor distributors.
