How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the commodity as Telephone, steel, NOI, SU, boxed or crated, and include NMFC 28000 Class 100 on the BOL.
- Ship set-up booths only; do not tender knocked-down units under this item. Use a fully enclosed box or custom wood crate, banded to a skid.
- Stabilize tall, top-heavy frames with internal blocking and foam at corners; if glazing or electronics are present, float-pack to prevent contact.
- Provide exact piece count, weight, and dimensions to avoid capacity and oversize fees, and request liftgate or jobsite delivery when needed.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 delivers predictable rating and faster quotes for rollouts and replacements.
- Clear SU and packaging rules reduce reclassifications and billing disputes with carriers.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and lowers compliance overhead.
- Accurate NMFC mapping strengthens claims defense and helps control total landed cost.
