How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack pairs of trees in sturdy boxes with dividers or paper wrap to prevent metal-to-wood scuffing; bundle by size (e.g., 50 pairs per carton, size-labeled).
- Choose cartons with at least 32 ECT and fill all voids to stop shifting; cap weight per box around 35–45 lb for safer handling and fewer crush claims.
- Palletize cartons square on 48x40 with no overhang; add corner boards and two straps, then stretch-wrap to keep stacks tight and labels visible.
- On the BOL, describe as “Boot/Shoe Trees, metal or wood, NMFC 28100, Class 85”; avoid calling them display forms to stay in the correct classification.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable Class 85 rating reduces reclass disputes and surprise fees, streamlining audits and carrier negotiations.
- Single NMFC for both metal and wood forms simplifies item setup, SKU consolidation, and quoting across product variants.
- Non-hazardous status expands carrier options and eliminates hazmat surcharges, improving routing flexibility and cost control.
- Boxed packaging improves cube utilization and lowers damage rates, resulting in better cost per pair and fewer claim write-offs.
