| 28900.00 | BOX GROUP: Articles consist of Boxes or Crates, including Fiberboard or Paperboard Cans or Cartons, as described in items subject to this grouping. |
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm your freight is packaged as boxes or crates and identify whether contents are fiberboard or paperboard cans/cartons; note the material on your BOL.
- Write a clear NMFC description line such as: “Boxes/Crates – Fiberboard or Paperboard Cans/Cartons – NMFC 28900,” and include accurate piece counts per master pack.
- For LTL, unitize on pallets with edge protectors, banding, and tight wrap; avoid pallet overhang and mark top-load limits for crush‑sensitive paperboard.
- Split mixed packaging into separate line items (e.g., wooden crates with paperboard canisters vs. fiberboard cartons in master boxes) to prevent reclass disputes.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Faster quoting and tendering by pointing carriers to a clear packaging-based NMFC grouping.
- Lower risk of reclass/reweigh charges through precise descriptions of boxes, crates, and fiber/paperboard content.
- Fewer damage claims by aligning packaging protections with crush-prone fiberboard and paperboard components.
- Streamlined SOPs across SKUs: consistent labeling and documentation improves audit trails and carrier compliance.
