How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Use heavy-duty double- or triple-wall cartons sized to the valve, cap flanged ends, and immobilize the body with foam-in-place, molded inserts, or wood blocking.
  2. Reinforce the carton bottom with cross-pattern filament tape; add a plywood pad for heavier valves, then palletize with no overhang and secure using banding and stretch wrap.
  3. Mark orientation arrows and center-of-gravity lines to guide handling. Print NMFC 29480, Class 100 on the BOL; include accurate piece counts and total weight—no density needed.
  4. Bag handwheels, bolts, and gaskets separately inside the box. Shield machined faces with VCI paper and cover threads or flanges with protective caps to prevent transit damage.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable pricing with a fixed Class 100 rating—simplifies LTL quotes and budgeting across carriers.
  • Faster tendering and fewer reweigh disputes since density data isn’t required for this pre-classed item.
  • Non-hazardous and boxed presentation broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat fees or special handling surcharges.
  • Damage mitigation from standardized boxing and palletization reduces claims, rework on machined faces, and downtime in the field.
