How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Identify panel type and packaging: plywood or OSB bundles, fiber or honeycomb bulkhead panels, securely strapped or boxed as packaged freight.
- Estimate density using shipment weight and known bundle cube; thin panels can use count × average thickness × face size to approximate volume for class 125–300.
- Reinforce edges with angleboard and stretch-wrap to prevent corner crush; keep bundle heights uniform so packages stack cleanly on LTL trailers.
- Print NMFC 29970 on the BOL and label as bracing/bulkheads/dunnage (packaged) to avoid misrating as lumber or loose wood parts.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Correct density placement within the 125–300 range can lower your effective freight class and reduce LTL rates.
- Packaged, squared bundles minimize handling damage and claims, protecting margins on repeat shipments.
- Consistent bundle footprints improve trailer cube utilization, enabling better consolidation and fewer accessorials.
- Clear NMFC identification reduces reclass, reweigh, and inspection fees, stabilizing landed costs and quotes.
