How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the metal and thickness: use this item for brass, bronze, or copper plate/sheet/strip boxed for shipment, especially thin stock under 38 gauge (0.004 inch).
- If you plan to bundle material 0.004 inch or thicker instead of boxing, review Note, item 106722 for the correct treatment; the boxed Class 60 listing may not apply to bundles.
- Protect edges and surfaces: interleave with kraft or VCI paper, add chipboard or hardboard stiffeners, and fit corner/edge guards so thin sheets don’t curl, dent, or scratch in transit.
- Palletize boxes flat with no overhang, strap and stretch-wrap, and mark the BOL and cartons with “NMFC 30740, Class 60 – Non-Hazardous.” Include piece count and actual weight for accurate LTL rating.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 60 with no density rating reduces reclass risk and keeps LTL quotes consistent.
- Lower claims: boxed thin-gauge flat stock minimizes edge damage and surface scuffs, cutting replacement and delay costs.
- Operational simplicity: one NMFC for brass, bronze, and copper flat stock streamlines BOLs across multiple SKUs and vendors.
- Better carrier acceptance: clear packaging and labeling for boxed sheets speeds dock handling and helps avoid accessorials or refusals.
