How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Package heavy blocks and plates on full-deck pallets with slip sheets between layers; add corner protectors and two steel bands per axis to prevent chipping.
- Ship tubes in V-block cradles or enclosed wood crates; plug ends, cross-strap securely, and tag “No Forks Under Load” to avoid crushing thin-walled vitrified clay.
- Orient plates on A-frames with rubber spacers; keep cast stone components low and evenly supported to avoid point loading on edges during LTL handling.
- On the BOL, cite NMFC 32080, specify material (alumina, cast stone, or vitrified clay), piece count, and max dimensions; mark non-hazmat and request limited-access or jobsite delivery if needed.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Lower damage claims by reinforcing edges and surfaces—brittle alumina and vitrified clay are expensive to replace and can stall wastewater projects.
- Fewer reclass and rebill issues by listing NMFC 32080 on the BOL even with Class N/A, helping carriers match tariff ratings without density disputes.
- Improved LTL economics using uniform pallets and A-frames that cube well, increasing trailer utilization and reducing per-piece freight costs.
- Quicker receiving at treatment plants and municipal sites via clear labeling by segment and material, cutting unload times and crane standby charges.
