Classification Details

NMFC Description Class
32735.00 Bristles, brush or broom, plastic, other than broom segments, sections or refills, in bales or boxes, having a density of 20 pounds or greater per cubic foot, see Note, item 32736 60

Notes

Note 32736: NOTE-Density must be shown by the shipper on the shipping order and bill of lading at the time of shipment. If density is not shown and shipment is inadvertently accepted, charges will initially be assessed under the provisions of item 68310, naming 'Fibers, NOI.' Upon satisfactory proof of actual density, freight charges will be adjusted accordingly.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Verify the product scope: loose plastic bristles for brushes or brooms in boxes (or bales), not broom segments, sections, or refills. Check NMFC Note, item 32736 if in doubt.
  2. Document density at 20 lb/ft³ or higher to qualify for Class 60. Example: a 24"x24"x24" carton weighing 170 lb = 21.3 lb/ft³.
  3. Pack bristle bundles tightly in double-wall cartons. Tie bundles, line cartons with poly to contain stray fibers, and orient bristles to avoid puncturing the box walls.
  4. Palletize cartons in columns, avoid over-compressing to chase density, and use edge protectors plus two straps. Label weight clearly for dock handling.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Class 60 pricing for dense bristle loads helps reduce LTL freight rates versus higher classes.
  • Accurate density proof and clear packaging minimize reclass, inspection delays, and chargebacks.
  • Boxed presentation improves stackability and cube utilization, lowering cost per shipped unit.
  • Non-hazardous material broadens carrier options and simplifies routing with fewer restrictions.
