How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Show NMFC 32750 and Class 85 on the BOL, and list bale count, pallet count, and any protective covers used.
- Palletize tightly: lay bales flat on 48x40 pallets, add a slip sheet, band crosswise, and stretch-wrap to capture loose chaff.
- Keep it dry: choose enclosed vans or use waterproof tarps on flatbeds; avoid floor loading in damp conditions or during rain.
- Plan handling: use forklift clamps or long forks, keep ties intact, and avoid spearing bales to prevent fiber loss and claims.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 simplifies rating and removes density calculations, speeding up quoting.
- Baled format stacks efficiently to improve cube usage and lower cost per pound on LTL lanes.
- Non-hazardous material reduces carrier restrictions and minimizes accessorial risk.
- Accurate NMFC match helps avoid reclass fees, disputes, and delivery delays.
