How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 33400 as “buckles/loops/slides, clothing, NOI” on the BOL and use the published class range 77.5–85 for cartons.
- Pack small hardware in inner polybags or compartment boxes inside a sturdy corrugated carton; double-wall is ideal for metal buckles.
- Palletize multiple cartons to prevent loss of tiny parts; use slip sheets, corner boards, strapping, and stretch wrap to lock cartons in.
- Cap carton weights to manageable levels (e.g., under 40–45 lb) and label with SKU counts to simplify receiving and reduce shortage claims.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable LTL quotes with a fixed range (77.5–85) instead of density-based swings, improving rate accuracy and budgeting.
- Better packaging for tiny components cuts damage and loss, lowering reship costs and claim exposure for apparel hardware shipments.
- Non-hazmat status streamlines routing and documentation, speeding up booking and reducing accessorial surprises.
- Smart consolidation of small cartons onto one pallet reduces minimum charges, handling touches, and potential reclass fees.
