How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the item matches NMFC 33770: expanded honeycomb core (fiberboard, paper, plastic, or metal), faced with wallboard, no metal or wood frame, shipped in packages.
- Package for face and edge protection: use full-surface cartons or corrugated wraps, rigid edge/corner guards, and banding that won’t crush the honeycomb. Keep faces from abrasion.
- Book at fixed Class 85 without density. In your TMS, select packaging as packages (cartons/crates; palletized packages are acceptable) and list piece count and exterior dimensions.
- Avoid misclassifications: do not use this item for framed panels, solid boards, or foam-core products. If moisture is a risk, add poly wrap and mark Do Not Stack if required.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 85 means faster quotes and fewer reweigh/reclass fees for honeycomb wallboard-faced panels.
- Reduced claims exposure: edge-guarded, properly packaged panels resist crush and scuff, lowering damage ratios and replacement costs.
- Compliance-driven savings: meeting the “in packages” requirement and excluding framed builds minimizes carrier disputes and accessorials.
- Operational efficiency: lightweight honeycomb construction improves cube utilization, letting builders and partition installers ship more surface area per skid.
