How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Describe each piece clearly on the BOL: note material (cement, concrete, gypsum, or glass/cellulose fiber reinforced), finish, quantity, and max length; include cut sheets for custom cornices or coffers.
- Crate fragile medallions, panels, and coffers with rigid plywood, foam separators, and corner protection; band the crate to a skid and mark orientation (Do Not Stack/Upright).
- Bundle long molding and trim with wood cleats and edge protectors; keep overhang minimal and flag any lengths over 12–20 ft to avoid overlength surprises.
- Wrap gypsum and fiber-cement items in moisture barrier film; provide 4-way forklift access with dunnage blocks to prevent tine damage to soffit, siding, and pilasters.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Reduced breakage on brittle plaster/gypsum components lowers claim costs and project delays.
- Precise NMFC description for architectural shapes minimizes reclass fees and inspection holds.
- Smart bundling and crating help dodge overlength and cubic minimum charges on LTL lanes.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and speeds tendering during peak construction seasons.
