How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use Class 70 and the exact description on your BOL: “Doors, airplane hangar, steel, not glazed” to prevent reclass and billing disputes.
- Crate door leaves in a rigid frame or band to a heavy skid with edge guards; block and brace to stop racking. Do not stack freight on top.
- Capture accurate dims for each crate. If panels are over standard LTL limits, book flatbed with tarps and lift via spreader bar; avoid liftgates for weight/size.
- Bundle tracks, rollers, and hardware in labeled cartons inside the master crate; cap track ends and wrap surfaces to prevent bending and abrasion.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 delivers predictable rating and fewer reclass fees compared with density-based items.
- Non-hazardous status simplifies carrier selection and avoids hazmat surcharges at airport or jobsite deliveries.
- Proper crating greatly reduces panel damage, cutting claim costs and preventing hangar build delays.
- Clear NMFC mapping speeds quoting and routing for project timelines, improving bid accuracy and schedule reliability.
