How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Reference NMFC 34300 on the BOL and specify Package 226 or 1286, plus whether the unit is boxed or crated to prevent reclass.
- Shield rails, hinges, and panel edges with foam, corner boards, and a rigid backer; place loose hardware in a labeled inner carton.
- Palletize tall cartons vertically, strap in two directions, and add Do Not Stack cones to avoid scissor-panel crush or track bending.
- For jobsite deliveries, request liftgate and call-ahead service and note limited access typical of remodel or retail fit-out locations.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Clear packaging callouts (226 or 1286) reduce reclass fees and billing disputes.
- Crating or reinforced boxing lowers damage risks on tracks and panels, cutting claim costs.
- Accurate item identification speeds quotes and helps negotiate better LTL rates for multi-door orders.
- Optimized pallet builds improve cube efficiency and shorten dock handling time across terminals.
