How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List each component on the BOL—door panels, steel frames, automatic actuators, controls, and hardware—under NMFC 34320, Class 85 for clean rating and quoting.
- Pack KD panels flat on pallets with corner protection; block and band frames so they cannot roll. Cushion sensor heads and control boxes in labeled inner cartons.
- Keep fixtures and fasteners bagged by door set to avoid mixing on multi-door shipments. Example: carton label “Door Set A – hinges, closers, anchors.”
- Use moisture-resistant wrap or VCI paper for steel parts that will be installed underground, and mark crates “Do Not Stack” if frames exceed panel strength.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with fixed Class 85—no density calculations or reclass hassles for KD mine door sets.
- Cleaner receiving and fewer claims by shipping frames, panels, and automatic fixtures knocked down and individually protected.
- Faster quoting and scheduling for mine contractors and OEMs using a single NMFC item across varied packaging (crates, bundles, pallets).
- Accurate classification reduces unexpected accessorials and reweigh fees, improving margins on project bids and maintenance contracts.
