How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Measure the largest panel and choose a pallet that exceeds the width by 2–4 inches; align gate rails parallel to the pallet deck to reduce flex.
- Bundle individual wood leaves with foam between slats and add rigid edge protectors on stile ends, then strap firmly or place inside a simple crate.
- Remove or secure latches, rollers, and hinges in a small inner carton; mark the carton “Hardware Enclosed” and fix it inside the bundle or crate.
- Request non-stack handling and add corner posts for tall pieces; photograph packaging and label panels to support claims and prevent reclass issues.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Protection-first packaging reduces damage claims and avoids costly jobsite delays on elevator installs and modernization projects.
- Clear NMFC reference (34560) and non-hazmat status speed up LTL quotes and minimize carrier exceptions.
- Palletized, blocked, and braced shipments cut loading time and lower accessorial risks like rehandling or limited access fees.
- Right-sized pallets and consolidated hardware lower oversize charges and keep freight rates predictable for bids.
