How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List each package with piece count and clip size on the BOL, then cite “Elevator Guide Clips, iron, in packages — NMFC 34570, Class 50.” No density entry needed.
- Bag small clips in poly sleeves, place in sturdy corrugated cartons, then palletize. Use corner boards and two straps plus wrap to prevent loss of tiny parts.
- Keep cartons under heavy compression loads by column-stacking and capping the pallet. Mark cartons “Small Hardware—Do Not Break Down” to avoid OS&D.
- Avoid mixing loose fasteners or oily components with the clips. If shipping with rails or brackets, separate SKUs and label each carton clearly for quick receiving.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 50 removes density disputes and reclass fees, improving rating accuracy for iron hardware.
- Clear NMFC identification speeds carrier acceptance and reduces claims tied to small-part loss or mislabeling.
- Non-hazardous status simplifies tendering and avoids hazmat surcharges or special handling requirements.
- Carton-and-pallet packaging improves stackability and cube use, helping lower LTL cost per pound on building materials.
