How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- State on the BOL: “Elevator Plungers, steel, NMFC 34610, Class 70,” and note the packaging type (box, crate, or steel casing) plus count and weight.
- Choose packaging by risk: use sturdy wood crates for long or heavy plungers, heavy corrugated boxes for smaller units, and steel casing when you need maximum protection for precision-finished surfaces.
- Prevent rolling and bending: install chocks, blocking, and banding inside the crate; mark Do Not Stack; provide exact length and center-of-gravity so carriers can use long forks or a spreader bar.
- Protect the finish: cap ends, apply light oil or VCI wrap against corrosion, add moisture barriers, and secure with edge protectors to avoid strap marks during LTL handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 delivers predictable LTL pricing and reduces reclass fees since no density calculation is required.
- Jobsite-ready packaging (crates or steel casings) cuts damage claims and preserves tight tolerances essential for elevator performance.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options, avoids hazmat surcharges, and speeds tendering and approvals.
- Clear NMFC mapping (34610) streamlines audits and contracts with elevator OEMs and contractors, improving quoting speed and supply planning.
