How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Measure overall footprint including landings, brackets, and guardrails; quote using the largest assembled section or provide a breakdown for modular pieces.
- Protect edges and treads with blocking, corner boards, and banding; crate heavy steel platforms and use VCI wrap for galvanized or painted finishes.
- Select mode by build style: LTL for knocked-down sections on pallets; partial or full flatbed for welded assemblies with secure lift points.
- Mark center of gravity, sling/lift locations, and no-touch surfaces; request appointments and jobsite delivery notes for urban installations.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate NMFC 34650 use reduces reclass and reweigh fees on oversized stair assemblies.
- Robust crating and edge protection cut damage claims and prevent costly jobsite delays.
- Right-size the mode (LTL vs. flatbed/PTL) to lower linehaul and accessorial charges.
- Clear specs—materials, coating, piece count—speed carrier approvals and improve quote turnaround.
