Note 34736: NOTE-Provisions apply on wood or simulated wood flooring, finished or requiring further surface finishing after installation.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Ship hardwood, engineered, or laminate flooring in sealed cartons or bundles and band them to pallets; add corner boards to protect tongue-and-groove edges.
- For long planks (6–8 ft), use 96x48 skids or extended runners so cartons don’t overhang; block and brace to prevent flexing and edge crush in transit.
- Print “NMFC 34735 — Flooring, NOI, natural or simulated wood — Class 60” on the BOL; no density entry required. Reference Note, item 34736 if your specs warrant.
- Keep wood flooring separate from tile or stone on mixed loads to simplify handling, avoid shifts, and maintain a clean Class 60 application.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 60 provides predictable LTL rates and avoids density-based reclass for varied flooring SKUs.
- Single item covers both natural and simulated wood, reducing paperwork and the risk of reclassification fees on mixed engineered/laminate shipments.
- Package-focused handling reduces edge damage and moisture claims, lowering OS&D costs and improving delivery quality.
- Non-hazardous status expands carrier options and scheduling flexibility, supporting tight project timelines and controlled freight spend.
