Note 35001: NOTE-Articles must be protected by packing forms or other packaging materials necessary to afford adequate protection against damage.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm packaging meets the item: only mantels packed in boxes or crates qualify for NMFC 35000; review Notes 35001 and 35002 for any exceptions before tendering.
- Shield decorative profiles and corners. Use foam edge guards, rigid U-channels, and interior bracing in boxes; for stone or cast mantels, build a crate with blocking and cross‑bracing.
- Plan for length handling. Keep the longest piece under 96 in when possible to avoid length surcharges, or flag oversize and strap the box/crate to a pallet to prevent tipping.
- Label clearly for orientation and care: This Side Up, Fragile, Do Not Stack. Add liftgate, limited access, or residential delivery if shipping to job sites or homes.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 200 rating streamlines quotes and reduces reclass/density disputes for both wood and stone mantels.
- Packaging compliance (boxed or crated) lowers damage risk on ornate finishes, cutting claim costs and project delays.
- Predictable LTL pricing improves budgeting for millwork shops, fireplace dealers, and builders coordinating multi-stop deliveries.
- Proactive accessorial planning (length flags, liftgate, limited access) avoids surprise fees and keeps installations on schedule.
