NMFC Description Class

Notes

Note 35086: NOTE-Cores (all space within frames and between facings) must be of cellular or solid construction or consist of insulating materials. Rigid facings may be of any material or combination of materials.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Confirm the product fits NMFC 35085: interior partitions or wall panels with metal or wood frames and rigid facings, with or without integral doors, packaged in boxes or crates.
  2. Crate panels tightly with edge/corner protectors and cross-bracing; immobilize any prehung door slabs so frames don’t rack in transit. Add foam between faces to prevent scuffing.
  3. Document the full outside crate or box dimensions and weight on the BOL; mark center of gravity, “Do Not Top Load,” and indicate if the package is non-stackable.
  4. Review related NMFC notes (items 34282, 35086, 35087) for exceptions or special construction details, then photograph the packed shipment to support claims.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Accurate use of NMFC 35085 reduces reclass fees and inspection delays by aligning packaging (boxes/crates) with the published item.
  • Damage control for finished rigid facings and integral doors lowers claim rates and keeps project timelines intact.
  • Clear packaging details help carriers quote LTL rates more predictably, improving cost visibility during bid and procurement stages.
  • Crated “kit” shipments streamline jobsite receiving and staging, cutting handling time and labor during installation.
