How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Bundle cylindrical iron cores tightly with steel banding and place on timber dunnage in V-blocks or cradles to prevent rolling; chock ends for stability.
- Mark total weight and piece count on each bundle; example: bundle six 10-ft cores on 4x4 hardwood dunnage, two bands per contact point.
- Choose equipment that fits length and lift needs; for long bundles, request LTL carriers with long freight capability or use a flatbed with proper blocking.
- Protect ends with caps or plywood pads to avoid telescoping damage, and keep bundles uniform by length and diameter for safer handling and rate accuracy.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 50 lowers LTL base rates for dense iron, helping control total landed cost on heavy construction shipments.
- Single NMFC entry (no density formula) speeds quoting and reduces reclass or rebill risk tied to dimensional variance.
- Standardized bundling and cradle blocking cut handling damage and downtime at job sites, improving schedule reliability.
- Clear classification supports predictable budgeting for repetitive buys of piling cores across regional or national projects.
