How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Match packaging to deployment: box smaller treadles for integrators, or palletize loose contact plates for DOT crews; strap with steel banding and edge protectors to prevent damage.
- Safeguard steel‑rubber assemblies by wrapping rubber interfaces, adding a rigid top sheet to avoid compression, and keeping them away from heat or solvents during transit.
- Distribute weight evenly on pallets: place the heaviest plates low and centered, keep faces flat, cap stacks with plywood, and mark Do Not Top Stack if warping is a concern.
- Document precisely on the BOL: NMFC 35300, Class 55, non‑hazardous. Note packaging type (boxes, packages, or loose) and exact counts to speed terminal inspections.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 55 gives predictable LTL pricing for dense steel parts, helping contractors and ITS suppliers quote jobs with confidence.
- Flexible packaging options (loose, packages, or boxed) reduce site prep time and can shorten pickup windows on active roadway projects.
- Non‑hazardous status widens carrier choice and avoids hazmat surcharges, cutting total landed cost for recurring maintenance shipments.
- Single NMFC for steel and steel‑rubber variants prevents reclass fees when mixed on a pallet, simplifying procurement and freight auditing.
