How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Declare NMFC 35480 at tender and note Class 60; this item ships by weight, so record accurate gross weights per pallet and list bag/box/pail counts.
- For bagged powders, use moisture barriers and tight stretch wrap; add corner boards and tier sheets to prevent split bags during compression at cross-docks.
- For pails or drums of liquid/latex underlayment, keep upright, secure lids/bungs, and use UN-rated containers if your SDS indicates. Add “This Side Up” and “Hazmat” labels as required.
- Reference Note, item 35482 in paperwork if applicable, attach the SDS, and arrange jobsite services (liftgate, appointment, limited access) to avoid re-delivery and handling damage.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Single, predictable Class 60 minimizes rating disputes and speeds quoting for construction supply distributors and flooring contractors.
- Weight-based rating removes density calculations, reducing admin time and errors when mixing bags, boxes, pails, and drums on the same pallet.
- Proper hazmat documentation and packaging improve carrier acceptance, lowering spill cleanup risks and potential surcharge exposure.
- Packaging to the jobsite use-case (sturdy boxes or sealed pails) reduces damage, shortens install timelines, and curbs costly reconsignments.
