How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 35570 and Class 55 on the BOL, and note “wood built-up, covered with iron/steel, crated” to avoid misclassifying it as standard lumber.
- Inspect crates for solid skids, internal blocking, and corner protection; secure the metal-clad edges so they can’t rub through the crate during LTL handling.
- Mark center of gravity and total weight on the crate; provide forklift entry clearance and use spreader bars for heavy lifts to protect both wood and metal surfaces.
- Control moisture with VCI wrap or desiccant packs inside the crate to prevent steel oxidation in transit or during cross-dock storage.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Single, density-free rating at Class 55 enables faster quotes and reduces reclass risk, cutting unexpected charges.
- Crated, metal-clad construction resists handling damage, lowering claim frequency and downtime on site deliveries.
- Predictable, low class helps reduce LTL linehaul costs for repeat shipments of composite building components.
- Clear non-hazmat status streamlines paperwork and shortens tender-to-pickup cycle times for project schedules.
