How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use only boxes or crates—avoid loose bundles. Add internal blocking and dividers so enameled angles or channels can’t shift or chafe during transit.
- Protect the finish: interleave foam or VCI wrap, cap sharp ends, and apply edge protectors before banding. Never tension bands directly against the enamel.
- Palletize crates with 4‑way entry and secure using strapping over corner boards. If finish is crush‑sensitive, mark Do Not Stack and use top‑caps.
- State the commodity precisely on the BOL: “Angles or Channels, enameled, iron or steel (or wood covered with iron/steel/tin plate), NMFC 35640, Class 70, Non‑Haz.” Include piece count and outer dims for handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 rating eliminates density disputes, reducing reclass fees and speeding up quotes.
- Non‑hazmat status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges and compliance overhead.
- Crated/boxed packaging safeguards the enamel finish, cutting damage claims and costly jobsite delays.
- Clear labeling under NMFC 35640 streamlines TMS tendering and improves rate shopping with predictable LTL costs.
