How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use Class 77.5 when quoting LTL for cast architectural pieces (e.g., bronze plaques, grilles, handrail brackets) packed in boxes or crates.
- Pack to stop metal-on-metal abrasion: wrap with foam or VCI paper, add corner guards, and block inside the crate so heavy castings cannot shift.
- Palletize crates with 4-way fork access and center the weight; mark “Cast Metalwork—Do Not Tip” to reduce handling risks for fragile ornamentals.
- List contents and packaging type on the BOL as “Architectural Building Work, cast copper/brass/bronze—packaged” to avoid reclass and inspection delays.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: a fixed Class 77.5 removes density calculations and cuts rating disputes on specialty metalwork.
- Fewer damage claims by aligning packaging to heavy, brittle castings—saving on replacements, rework, and jobsite delays.
- Fast quoting for contractors and fabricators bidding architectural packages, improving bid turnaround and win rates.
- Cleaner audits: accurate NOI description and packaging detail reduce NMFC corrections, fees, and administrative churn.
