How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Bundle battens tightly with steel banding and edge guards; add timber dunnage every 4-6 ft to keep bundles level. Mark NMFC 35790, Class 50 on labels.
- Prevent flash rust: wrap packages with poly or VCI paper and cap the ends. Add Keep Dry labels for outdoor cross-docks.
- Plan for length. For 10-20 ft pieces, book carriers that accept long freight and use center-support dunnage to prevent bowing.
- Control stacking. If top-load risk exists, use no-top-stack cones or spacers; otherwise keep bundles single-high to protect thin edges.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Low fixed Class 50 reduces LTL rates on dense steel components.
- No density math accelerates quoting and minimizes reclass fees.
- Standardized bundles cut handling time and claims, and non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges.
- Clear NMFC mapping (35790) streamlines audits and aligns procurement and freight budgeting.
