How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Measure the full outside footprint, including spark arrestor screens and collars, before packing. Choose a crate for oversized or delicate cowls; sturdy boxes work for compact caps.
- Cushion soft metals: wrap with non‑abrasive foam, protect corners and rims, and fill voids to stop rattle. For copper, line with acid‑free paper to reduce tarnish.
- If crating, block and brace the mounting flange, add cross‑bracing for tall cowls, and band the crate to a pallet. Mark Do Not Stack to prevent crush damage.
- State the material (aluminum or copper) and packaging type (box or crate) on the BOL. Include photos and request liftgate or residential delivery when shipping to roofing sites.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Avoid reclasses and disputes by clearly identifying aluminum or copper chimney caps/cowls and the box/crate packaging on paperwork.
- Cut damage risk on thin‑gauge metal with edge protection and rigid bracing, reducing claim costs and replacement delays.
- Control costs by using boxes for small caps to limit cubic fees, and consolidating multiple units in a partitioned crate for a single LTL minimum charge.
- Speed up transit: non‑haz status and carrier‑friendly packaging (boxes or crates) streamline pickups for roofers, fabricators, and chimney services.
