How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Describe the item precisely on the BOL: “Rotating chimney cowls/caps, iron or steel, sheet or sheet-and-cast.” Include piece count, pallet count, and lock the rotor with a zip tie to prevent spin.
- Protect the vane assembly and collar: use foam rings or custom corrugated cradles so the cap is suspended in a double‑wall carton. Add edge guards and a top cap when strapping to a 48×40 pallet.
- If shipping multiples, nest bases with corrugated layers between caps to avoid metal-to-metal contact. Strap cartons to the pallet and mark Do Not Stack if the vanes are exposed.
- Provide accurate outer dimensions and weight even though no class range is listed; carriers rate LTL on cube and handling. Example: a 14 lb, 24 in cap in a 22×22×18 in carton, 1 carton per pallet.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Clear NMFC 36080 identification reduces reclass risk and surprise billing compared with generic HVAC/vent listings.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines tendering and avoids hazmat fees or special documentation.
- Damage-resistant packaging (immobilized rotor, edge protection, palletization) cuts claims and keeps freight rates predictable.
- Standardized carton or crate programs let you consolidate SKUs, improve quote accuracy, and negotiate better LTL pricing.
