How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Use sturdy boxes or fully enclosed crates that immobilize each casting; add foam blocks or corrugated dividers so iron edges don’t chip. Example: nest flue caps with honeycomb pads.
  2. Wrap each deflector in VCI paper or poly to limit rust, then band the carton or crate to a pallet to prevent movement during LTL handling.
  3. Label orientation and add Do Not Stack when vanes or ribs could crack under weight; keep no overhang so forks don’t strike the iron.
  4. Show NMFC 36100, Class 70 and the packaging type (boxed or crated) on the BOL to avoid reclass; photograph the packout for claims support.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable pricing: fixed Class 70 avoids density calculations and reduces surprise adjustments on chimney and HVAC replenishment loads.
  • Lower damage costs: compliant boxes/crates with blocking protect brittle cast iron, cutting breakage, RMAs, and reshipments.
  • Faster handoffs: non-hazardous status removes hazmat steps and surcharges, speeding carrier acceptance and terminal throughput.
  • Fewer reclass fees: declaring NMFC 36100 with correct packaging aligns with tariff rules, protecting margins and customer SLAs.
